The Just Like Me! Book Box Gets...

Two thumbs up! Readers are made on the laps of their parents. Since the girl was in utero, we have read to her every single day. An educator, freelancer in the educational publishing industry, and avid reader, I am a firm believer in the power of books.  So when I saw the Just Like Me! subscription box, I had to jump on it.

About the Company

The Just Like Me! Box subscription service is ran by a family who believes in the importance of exposing children to a diverse selection of literature, specifically African American children's books. Representation is everything--and this subscription service gets it. I want my daughter to read about a variety of characters and stories, but it's important that her list includes stories with characters who she can identify with too.

The Cost and Contents of the Box

Just Like Me! Is a monthly subscription that costs $25.00. Each month, a wonderfully packaged box arrives with a themed bundle of books. The selected books are reviewed and chosen based on educational merit, awards, and popularity amongst readers. I'm pretty selective when it comes to choosing quality reading materials. Age appropriateness, underlying theme, and diversity in plot and character is key. There are three different age bands and each monthly subscription is gender neutral.

Why We Love the Service

Yeah, I can select a few books for the girl each month myself, but I really like the service because:

  • She gets to open a box every month of her very own. The girl's eyes just light up every time she gets her own "mail." The box is also packaged beautifully. The look on her face when opening up her book package is priceless.
  • I have a soft spot for any company that values diversity in children's literature.
  • It eliminates one task on my to-do list. Instead of me going to the book store, the books are at my door in just one click.
  • Memberships can be canceled at any time. That's right. No one is locked in.

We love the Just Like Me! subscription service and we hope they continue to thrive. R-E-A-D!
